The Second Service

What is happening to the second service? We live in times where it is difficult to be a Christian. We need to combat the spirit of the age with an active and alert Christianity, and a disciplined spiritual life.

The great Synod of Dort (1618 - 19) already warned against the slackening of the second service attendance. It also decided to have regular Catechism preaching during the second service to build up the people of God in their faith. Furthermore, the congregations were to be encouraged during family visitation to be faithful in their worship services. Why attend worship services? They are a means of grace. We come together as a priesthood of believers to offer praise to God, to be strengthened in our faith and to have preparation fo living according the principles of Holy Scripture. "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching" (Hebrews 10:25 N.I.V.).
