Johannes Dirk Tangelder was born and raised in Amsterdam, Holland, the beloved second oldest of a family of five. His early childhood was affected and disrupted by the war. In 1954 the family immigrated to Canada and settled in the Holland Marsh. John did various odd jobs and eventually took his manager's certificate with Stedman's in 1958. However, he felt led by the Lord to study for the ministry. He enrolled in the Central Baptist Seminary, Toronto. After graduation in 1962, he received a scholarship to study for his Drs. in Church History at the Free University, Amsterdam. Ile returned to Ontario and started his ministry in the Christian Reformed Church in Lindsay. In 1965 he married his beloved wife, Helen Feasby, of Uxbridge, Ontario. He then went to Calvin Seminary, Grand Rapids, for three semesters. Together he and Helen raised four children: Alice Ann, Bernard, Johan, and Mary. In September 1967 he was ordained in Vernon. BC. He served the church there for 4 years. His later ministries were in Wellandport for 6 years, 2 years as a missionary in the Philippines with Christian Reformed World Missions, East Strathroy CRC for 10 years, and his final pastorate in Williamsburg CRC. He and Helen moved to London in 1994. His retirement consisted mainly of continuing on with his reading, writing many book reviews and multiple articles on a wide variety of subjects for 4 publications. He considered this to be his ongoing ministry. In spite of ongoing health issues, John carried out a valiant journey in his life with the main focus being honouring his Lord and Master of his life. His testimony was carried right to the very last hour of his life. Ile loved the Lord. Thanks be to God! |
